The EmpowerHER project operates in Milot, Haiti, a community deeply affected by socio-economic challenges.
Her For Humanity
In June of 2018, I was on a medical mission trip in rural Milot, Haiti when I learned that a local school was on the brink of shutting down. The school provided a free education to about 120 children in an area where most families struggle to afford private schools, and the quality of education is uncertain. The closure of the school would not only leave these children without an education, but it would also mean that the hardworking staff members would lose their jobs.
Despite all the lives we had just changed with medicine and medical procedures, the fate of these children and staff members remained on my mind. I felt a deep sense of defeat. But then, something miraculous happened. A group of seven ordinary, professional women came together to form HER for Humanity. We knew that we had to take action and make a difference in the lives of these children and staff members.
As we continued on this journey to save the school and empower the community, something magical began to happen. The bond between the seven of us grew stronger and deeper with each passing day. We came from different backgrounds and had different life experiences, but we all shared a common goal – to make a difference in the lives of others. As we worked together towards this goal, we got to see each other in a whole new light.
I saw my friends’ strengths and skills that I never knew existed, each one of them amazed me. Dorothy is a master educator and instantly connected with and mentored the teaching staff. Michaelle has a knack for organizing events and bringing people together. Josee is great at fundraising and inspiring others to join our cause. Krystelle is effective at helping us find key resources. Daphne is versatile and wears various hats including acquiring talent and supplies. Last but not least, Martine is a natural born leader who keeps us in line and accountable towards our mission. I am in awe of these women and proud to work alongside them. They have my love and respect.
We have laughed together, cried together, and celebrated together as we overcame the challenges that came our way. There were times when we felt like giving up, but we always lifted each other up and kept pushing forward. As we saw the impact of our work on the community of Milot, our bond grew even stronger. We knew that our efforts were making a real difference in the lives of these children, and that was the greatest reward of all.
This journey to help others has created a bond that no amount of money could buy. We are not just friends, we are sisters bound by a shared mission to make the world a better place. And as we continue on this journey, we know that we can accomplish anything together.
Through our tireless efforts and the support of our community, we have been able to keep the school open and provide these children with the education they deserve. We are dedicated to making the world a better place, one child at a time. Join us in our mission to support education and uplift the community of Milot.

During my senior year, I found HER For Humanity. They supported us in creating 'STEAMing Through Summer,' a transformative camp in Haiti. Watching students, professors, and staff unite for an enriching summer experience filled my heart with joy. I'd gladly return to volunteer with HER For Humanity.
